Learning Environment

For sixty-nine years, St. Mary’s School has taken its students on a journey, where academic excellence, a Catholic education, and a Christ-centered environment are the milestones of our students’ achievement. Our community of parents, students, alumni, staff and parish share a belief that the hallmarks of a St. Mary’s education include a commitment to high standards for all students and a learning environment that values each child as an individual with unique needs and interests. Within the school we utilize the most current best practices in instruction, including the use of one-to-one technological devices in every classroom, grade 1-8, and opportunities for hands-on and project-based learning at all grade levels. St. Mary’s School has a warm, welcoming environment that visitors notice upon crossing our threshold. Every child is known by name by the staff, and even our oldest children look forward to the opportunity to spend time with our youngest children. Please explore the links above to see why so many families have started the academic journey for their children at St. Mary’s School.

Academic Excellence

All the elementary Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Knoxville are required to administer the Iowa Assessments (IA), Form G, to students in grades 3-8 and the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT), Form 8, to students in grades K, 2, 4, and 6.  These tests are psychometrically normed tests that are vetted for validity, reliability and bias.  For more information, visit http://www.riversidepublishing.com/products/ia/learnmore.html

In addition, in the spring during the testing window set by the Tennessee Department of Education, St. Mary’s School administers the End of Course (EOC) Algebra 1 to 8th grade students who are enrolled in the Algebra 1 class.  Students in the public schools are required to pass this test as one of their high school graduation requirements.

Individualized Learning

Hands-On Instruction

Faculty at all grade levels work together to hone students’ writing and research skills as well as link science to math, art, language arts, and history. Teachers build in collaborative learning opportunities and hands-on activities in many classes to allow students to truly explore their content.

St. Mary’s location in the heart of Oak Ridge, home to the Department of Education’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, brings science alive for our students. In addition to the wealth of scientific research expertise in town, the nearby Smoky Mountains also provide the ideal outdoor classroom, where middle school students participate in outdoor education research programs at Wesley Woods in Townsend, TN.

One-to-One Technology

St. Mary’s School is committed to ensuring our students are prepared for life beyond our school. In addition to having an excellent academic program, we are also giving our students a strong background in technology and 21st century skills, like collaboration, critical thinking, imagination, and communication. To facilitate this, students in grades 1-8 have individual Google Chromebooks that they are able to use in all of their classes. All of our students in grades pre-K through 8th grade attend technology class in the computer lab once a week to build their technology skills.

Close Family Atmosphere

St. Mary’s is a close-knit community where every child is known as an individual by his or her teachers, the school administration and staff, and students in other grade levels. Students in the early learning program are paired with students in the middle school program as class “buddies.”  They attend weekly Mass together and have opportunities throughout the school year to play, do crafts, and sometimes attend field trips together. Students on both end of the age range treasure these relationships. Parents can choose among a wide variety of opportunities to get involved in the school. There are opportunities for both working and stay-at-home parents to be as involved as they are interested in being.
