Atrium—Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

The Atrium at Saint Mary’s School offers a sacred space where children encounter Christ through the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, a faith-based program developed by Sofia Cavalletti in collaboration with Maria Montessori. Rooted in hands-on exploration and spiritual wonder, the program is child-led and guided by the Holy Spirit. Catechists introduce materials, fostering reflection and discovery at each student’s own pace.

Art

Foreign Language–Spanish

St. Mary’s Spanish program follows the State of Tennessee World Language Standards, emphasizing the 5 C’s of language learning: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities.

  • Pre-K–5th Grade: Introduction to Spanish, covering fundamental vocabulary, expressions, and cultural insights.
  • 6th–8th Grade: Foundational grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation with a focus on listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students explore Spanish-speaking cultures while preparing for future language studies.

Library

Saint Mary’s Library, housed in a historic space that once served as the parish church and later the school gym, offers a vast collection of over 10,000 books, with new additions annually.

  • Grades PreK–5 attend weekly library classes, engaging in read-aloud sessions and literary exploration.
  • Middle School students visit during breaks or with their Literature teacher to access resources and discover new genres.
  • Students learn to navigate the Dewey Decimal System and use the online catalog for independent research.
  • Teachers utilize the library for class research and book checkouts, fostering a culture of inquiry and discovery.

Music

At Saint Mary’s, all students from Pre-K through 8th grade participate in weekly music classes, exploring sounds, melodies, instruments, and musical styles.

  • Elementary students develop rhythm, group singing, and instrumental skills while learning about renowned composers.
  • Middle school students engage in advanced music theory, history, and composition.
  • School-wide performances include an Advent/Christmas program and a Spring concert featuring selections from Christian hymns to classics by Frank Sinatra and The Beatles.

Physical Education

Students at Saint Mary’s participate in Physical Education twice a week, developing fitness, sportsmanship, and lifelong athletic skills through team and individual sports.
