Mathematics

Middle school students deepen their abstract understanding of mathematics through standard and accelerated curricula.

  • Accelerated students complete Algebra I by 8th grade, while standard-track students master pre-algebra.
  • 6th grade focuses on rates, ratios, multi-digit operations, rational numbers, and multi-step problem-solving.
  • 7th grade advances proportional reasoning, rational number operations, and geometry applications.
  • 8th grade strengthens algebraic reasoning, linear equations, and extends number theory to irrational numbers.

Students are encouraged to find ways to apply their mathematical understandings to science, history, and the world outside of their classroom to develop a real-world context grounded in practical application. Teachers also support students in developing the perseverance and problem solving skills necessary for success with future math concepts.

Science

Middle school science at St. Mary’s prepares students for advanced study through a blend of direct instruction and hands-on lab experiments.

  • 6th grade explores Earth, Space, and Physical Science, focusing on energy, forces, and atmospheric systems.
  • 7th grade delves into Life Science, heredity, ecosystems, and the impact of human interaction on Earth’s resources.
  • 8th grade examines biodiversity, matter, and natural forces such as electricity and magnetism.

Students gain experience with advanced scientific tools, including graphing calculators, Vernier probes, and probeware for data analysis. A six-month guided research project culminates in school and regional science fairs, where St. Mary’s students have earned top honors 11 times in the last 15 years.

Social Studies

Middle school students engage in an in-depth study of geography and history, building on foundational knowledge from earlier grades.

  • 6th grade explores Eastern Hemisphere cultures, civilizations, and economic trends, tracing history from pre-history to the 1500s.
  • 7th grade covers the Western Hemisphere’s history, from early exploration to the Civil War, including Native American cultures, colonization, and westward expansion.
  • 8th grade examines U.S. history from Reconstruction to the present, integrating geography, economics, and social trends.

Throughout the curriculum, students refine research, analytical reasoning, and critical thinking, engaging with primary sources and historical writing.

Well-Rounded Education

St. Mary’s School embraces a holistic approach to education, recognizing each child’s unique development, abilities, and interests. Beyond core academics and religious instruction, students engage in weekly classes in art, music, physical education, and Spanish. Sixth grade further expands its learning with a Technology course, preparing students for advanced study through coding, game design, and digital literacy.
