2026 Gala of Lights – Honoring Father Michael Woods

May 1, 2026/in Community/by Hannah McFadden

We are grateful for the tremendous success of this past weekend’s Gala in support of our parish school and, especially, our dedicated teachers. The evening highlighted our community’s deep commitment to Catholic education and was enriched by the presence of clergy, diocesan guests, SMS teachers—both current and retired—and many alumni.

A special moment of the night was honoring Father Michael Woods, Pastor of St. Mary Parish from 1996–2006. A heartfelt video tribute featuring Father Woods and parishioner memories brought both laughter and gratitude.

This year’s Gala reached new milestones: our highest attendance ever and an outstanding $140,016 raised—an increase of $33,304 from last year. Sponsor support also grew by $9,000. During Raise the Paddle, an incredible $59,000 was contributed toward teacher Amazon Wish Lists, significantly surpassing previous years.

The energy in the room was truly remarkable. From the moment guests arrived, the atmosphere was lively, joyful, and full of connection. It was inspiring to see so many parishioners, families, alumni, and friends celebrating together, bidding enthusiastically, and showing such heartfelt support for our school and teachers.

We extend our sincere thanks to all donors, volunteers, and supporters whose generosity made this event possible. Your commitment strengthens our mission and ensures a vibrant future for Catholic education in our parish.

Gala of Lights 2026 – Location Change!

March 19, 2026/in Community/by Hannah McFadden

We would like to share an important update regarding the location of this year’s Gala of Lights. This year’s event will be held at the Edwena L. Crowe Ballroom at the Oak Ridge Conference Center, located at 1403 Oak Ridge Turnpike. This beautiful venue is named in honor of Edwena Crowe, a longtime and devoted parishioner of St. Mary’s. We are grateful for the opportunity to host this special evening in a space connected to someone who was part of our parish community for so many years.

This change allows us to host the Gala in a setting that is well-suited for a formal fundraising event. The ballroom’s elegance and functionality reduce the need for extensive decor and setup, making the evening more cost‑effective while significantly easing the workload on our volunteers. Most importantly, these thoughtful adjustments allow more of the funds raised to directly support our students and the mission of St. Mary’s School while ensuring the evening remains a welcoming, beautiful, and enjoyable night for all.

The Gala of Lights is St. Mary’s School’s signature fundraising event, an elegant evening where our community gathers to celebrate faith, service, and the hope that shines through shared generosity. Beginning this year, the Gala will also include the tradition of honoring an individual whose life and service have had a lasting impact on St. Mary’s Parish and School.

This new element of the Gala was inspired by reflections shared during St. Mary’s 75th Jubilee celebration, which invited our community to look back with gratitude at those whose faith and leadership helped shape the foundation we stand on today. In that spirit, we are honored to name Father Michael Woods as the inaugural Gala of Lights honoree.

Father Woods is being recognized in celebration of his 60 years of priestly vocation and his faithful service to St. Mary’s. His pastoral leadership, commitment to Catholic education, and deep care for this community have profoundly influenced our past and continue to guide our present. Honoring Father Woods allows us to give thanks for the legacy we have received while using this moment to invest intentionally in the future of St. Mary’s School and the students entrusted to us.

To support the flow of the evening with our new location, the Vigil Mass on Saturday, April 25th will be celebrated at 5:00 PM.

We look forward to coming together as a community for a special and memorable evening!

Inflatable Surprise Dance Party

November 5, 2025/in Community, News/by Hannah McFadden

A Hilarious Surprise for Our Students!

On October 31st, our teachers traded their usual classroom attire for inflatable costumes — and the results were unforgettable! As a reward for the students hitting their Fun Run goal, the staff surprised everyone with a costumed celebration that had the whole school buzzing.

From a giant parrot to a bouncy bee, the costumes were a hit — but the star of the show might have been Father Ray in his “man riding a dog” outfit, which had the kids laughing and pointing in delight. The surprise didn’t stop at the costumes: students were invited to join the teachers on the dance floor, where they grooved to the Cha Cha Slide and flapped along to the Chicken Dance.

The joy, laughter, and pure surprise on the kids’ faces made it a day to remember. Thank you to our amazing staff for going above and beyond to celebrate our students’ success in such a fun and memorable way!

2025 Fun Run – Success!

September 15, 2025/in Community/by Hannah McFadden

We are absolutely thrilled to share the results of this year’s Fun Run—thanks to your incredible support, we didn’t just meet our goal… we blew past it! Our original target of $15,000 was no match for the energy, generosity, and determination of our students, families, and staff. Together, we raised over $20,000 to support St. Mary’s School!

This achievement is a testament to the power of community. From cheering on the runners to sharing our campaign far and wide, every step you took made a difference. Parents, teachers, and students—you showed up, and we couldn’t be more grateful.

And the best part? We’ve got a BIG surprise in store for the kids to celebrate their hard work. Stay tuned in the coming weeks… we can’t wait for them to see their teachers in their costumes!

Every dollar raised goes directly toward helping our school grow, adapt, and continue providing an exceptional experience for every child. Thank you for believing in our mission and making this event such a joyful success.

75th Anniversary Mass and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

September 10, 2025/in Community/by Hannah McFadden

St. Mary’s School commemorated its 75th anniversary with a day full of joy, reflection, and community spirit. The celebration began with Mass led by Bishop Mark Beckman, honoring the school’s legacy of faith and education. Students, faculty, alumni, and guests filled the chapel, united in gratitude for the generations that have shaped the school’s journey.

Following the Mass, attendees gathered in the Marian Courtyard, where members of the Rosary Rose group provided a sweet treat—an array of delicious cookies that added a warm touch to the festivities.

The highlight of the morning was the ribbon-cutting ceremony, hosted by the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce. Students Erica White, Nathan Prothro, Radie Lowery, and Issrael Arellano proudly participated in the photo opportunity, representing the vibrant future of St. Mary’s.

Speeches from Mayor Gooch, Sister Catherine Marie, and Father Ray reflected on the school’s enduring mission and its role in the Oak Ridge community. Bishop Beckman concluded the ceremony with a heartfelt blessing, invoking continued grace and growth for the school in the years ahead.

One of the most anticipated moments came when the time capsule, put together 15 years ago, was opened. Inside were nostalgic treasures—trinkets, candy wrappers, and other mementos from students past. These items will be displayed in the school, offering a tangible connection to the memories and milestones of earlier generations.

Looking ahead, St. Mary’s plans to collect new items throughout the liturgical year to fill a fresh capsule, which will be sealed and opened in 2050. It’s a symbolic gesture that bridges the past, present, and future—reminding all who walk through its halls that St. Mary’s is more than a school; it’s a legacy.
