t. Mary’s School students had the option of participating in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Essay Competition. Conducted nationwide, the Patriot’s Pen is a VFW-sponsored youth essay competition that gives students an opportunity to write essays expressing their views on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s Patriot’s Pen essay asked students to describe “The America I Believe In….” Students were asked to think hard about the America they believe in and, in 300 – 400 words, articulate what makes our nation unique and great. We are so impressed with the sentiments shared by our students and proudly announce that Genevieve Robinson’s essay won first place. In her essay, Genevieve wrote, “We have a country in which our differences are celebrated instead of discouraged. Our different talents can be utilized to build a better, stronger nation.” Commander Mickey Vickery, U.S. Army Infantry visited Mrs. Sasser’s 7th grade class to present the certificate along with a $100.00 check. Winners from the local competitions are submitted to the district and potentially the national level. Good Luck, Genevieve!
Anna Kasemir, an 8th grader at St. Mary’s School, Oak Ridge has been selected to sing in the 2017 American Choral Directors Association National Middle School/Junior High Mixed Honor Choir on March 8th-11th in Minneapolis, MN. The ACDA is the premiere national choral organization, so singers come from all over the country to participate. She will have the opportunity to rehearse with master conductors and perform choral music at the very highest levels with other fine musicians. The MS/JH honor choir will be directed by Lynnel Joy Jenkins. Ms. Jenkins is the Artistic Director of the Princeton Girlchoir and choral teacher at the Timberlane Middle School of the Hopewell Valley Regional School District in Pennington, New Jersey. Ms. Jenkins’ varied conducting and teaching experience ranges from the elementary to collegiate level. She has served as Assistant Professor of Music Education at the Westminster Choir College of Rider University and Conductor of the Resident Training Choir at the American Boychoir School in Princeton, New Jersey. Mrs. Carol Villaverde, music teacher at SMS, shared her thoughts, “I have been blessed to sing with Anna in music classes since she was in 2nd grade. After her experience last year in the ACDA Southern Division Treble Honor Choir, Anna took the initiative to audition for the National Honor Choir this year. Over 4,200 singers auditioned to sing in the honor choirs this year, and Anna was selected to participate. I am proud of her accomplishment, but what I am most grateful for is that I get to work with my favorite musicians, the children at St. Mary’s School, every day.” Congratulations to Anna! We know she will be a wonderful musical ambassador of St. Mary’s School, the Diocese of Knoxville, and the state of Tennessee.
The St. Mary’s School girls varsity volleyball team recently competed in the Knoxville Independent School League (KISL) small-school tournament and beat Apostolic Christian Academy to win the championship at the Knoxville Christian School’s gym, in a winner-take-all match. This is the school’s fourth consecutive season and tournament championship.
Through the help of the St. Mary’s Legacy Foundation, St. Mary School in Oak Ridge is now the first diocesan school to offer “one-to-one” technology. The school used a grant of $29,200 to install wireless infrastructure and purchase dozens of Chromebooks to fulfill the goal of providing a Chromebook for every student in grades 1-8. The St. Mary’s Legacy Foundation also awarded a second grant of $11,765 to replace the outdated and unrepairable Public Address system in the school.
We are pleased to announce that St. Mary’s School students Elizabeth Brands, Sophie Sherlock, and Gabriella Wilkerson were selected to participate in the 2016 TN Treble Honor Choir. The singers sang under the direction of Dr. Derrick Fox, assistant professor of choral music education and choral conducting in the Ithaca College School of Music. The Tennessee Music Educators Association commissioned a piece to be performed at the conference opening concert and ceremonies. The piece entitled “Honeybees” was composed by Andrea Ramsey. Dr. Ramsey attended the conference and rehearsed with the choir as well as attended the choir’s premier performance of her composition.
Students learned and memorized their voice part on five pieces of music prior to attending the honors chorus. This year’s conductor was Deborah Dunne Sousa, Director of Music at the Episcopal School of Knoxville and Lecturer in Music Education at the University of Tennessee, where she teaches courses in elementary and middle school vocal music methods, supervises field experience and oversees student teachers and interns in elementary and middle school vocal music education. Congratulations to our 7th and 8th grade students.
