Crusader Athletics

A Message from our Athletic Director

Hello Crusaders!

My name is Mike Sweeney, and I am excited to be the new Athletic Director at St. Mary’s. My wife Monica and I have three children at St. Mary’s, and we love being members of the Crusader Family. Like many of you, I grew up playing a variety of sports and even when practicing and playing were difficult, it was always a positive experience. I believe that athletics give students opportunities to build character, serve others and think beyond themselves. In addition, sports also bring communities together and can lead to long-lasting friendships.

Over the past 4+ years I have coached football, basketball, and baseball with players as young as 5 years old. My primary goal at St. Mary’s is to strengthen our current programs and find additional opportunities for students to explore a variety of sports. I encourage all St. Mary’s families to participate in athletics and I would welcome any ideas on how we can improve and expand our programs.

We are always looking for more players, coaches, and volunteers. Please contact me if your child is interested in playing (or simply trying) a sport(s) and/or you would like to coach or volunteer.

Remember that physical forms are required for each child who participates in athletics. The physical form is available in the SMS Athletic Handbook. Coaches and volunteers must complete the Safe Environment Training. If you have not completed this training, please let me know and I can help guide you through the process.

I look forward to working with and serving all the incredible families at St. Mary’s

Sincerely,

Mike Sweeney

Athletic Director

Fall 2021

Cross Country

As the students prepare to enter Fall Break, the Cross Country team prepares to compete for the State Qualifiers at Victor Ashe Park on October 9th. This year, SMS had eight elementary runners. Their hard work has paid off as they continue to improve their personal best times for the season. The runners that competed at meets were: Wyatt Patterson, Liam Upchurch, Eli Weaver, Alessia Paoletto, Arianna Paoletto, Grace Treichel, Charlotte Gragg, & Christy Walters.

Kenda Hurt competed for the Middle School team and recently placed with a pair of top 50 finishes, including a 37th place finish in her last race. Good luck to all of the runners this Saturday as they look to qualify for State at Victor Ashe Park.

Volleyball

The 2021 SMS Volleyball team concluded their season last week after competing in the Division 3 KISL Tournament. The season saw the team competing closely in every game and the highlight of the season came with back to back wins against Paideia Academy and Temple Baptist. Going into the final game of the regular season, St. Mary’s was second in the division. However, SMS was unable to clinch the second seed after a losing to eventual Division 3 Tournament Champions, First Lutheran. St. Mary’s hosted the Division 3 Tournament, during which it was announced that SMS 8th grader, Sherlyn Guzman, was named to the All KISL Division 3. The championship game saw First Lutheran defeating Tate’s School.

After a successful season, the future looks bright as this year’s team only graduates two 8th graders. Members of the 2021 Volleyball team were: Sherlyn Guzman, Deidre Harris, Lucy Barnes, Ami Raimon, Bressa Zambrano, Jaylee Lloyd, Zofia Budzynski, Kelly Van Winkle, Ava Muller, Morgan Thompson, Aliana Ayala, & Katie Van Winkle.

Spring 2021

Golf

St. Mary’s Swings to the Top in Golf

It has been a very successful Spring for the 2021 SMS Golf Team. Picking up where they had left from the 2019 season, the Crusaders picked up another District Championship. This time it was the Boys team that was victorious, with the Girls team finishing second in the District!

However the success did not stop there for St. Mary’s. On May 3rd, at a rainy Centennial Golf Course, the Boys team would go on to win the Region Tournament. Additionally, the Boys team had the three highest individual scores in the Region Tournament. The team will go on to compete in the ETMSGA State Championship.

Unfortunately, the Girls team did not qualify for the ETMSGA State Championship, however two of Girls qualified for States by virtue of placing in the top 5 individual scores (that were not on the top 2 qualifying teams)!

Best of luck to both teams as they head to the ETMSGA State Championship!

1st Place Boys Individual – Jack Bents

2nd Place Boys Individual – Hunter Hinton

3rd Place Boys Individual – Lewis Niad

Individual Girls Qualifier – Morgan Snyder

Individual Girls Qualifier – Hope Panter

Soccer

SMS Soccer Ready for the Postseason Tournament

St. Mary’s Co-Ed Soccer Team wrapped up the regular season last Friday on a high note by securing 2nd place in the regular season. They will be the #2 seed in the postseason tournament that begins the week of May 10th and they will face Temple Baptist in the first round.

The Crusaders clinched 2nd place after defeating King’s Academy in an exciting 4-1 match. The game was tied 1-1 at halftime, and the Crusaders were able to pull away in the second half. However, it is very likely that they will face King’s Academy again in the semi-finals of the tournament.

St. Mary’s competes in the KISL Co-Ed Soccer League for 5th-8th graders. The KISL Soccer Tournament will be hosted by Maryville Christian this year. Best of the luck to the team as they look forward to taking home a championship!
